jack pot ou jackpot [ʒakpɔt; dʒakpɔt] n. m.
ÉTYM. V. 1970; angl. jackpot, mêmes sens; aussi « lot dont la masse s'augmente des enjeux successifs jusqu'à ce qu'il soit gagné », d'abord « poker dans lequel une paire de valets au moins est nécessaire pour ouvrir les paris », 1881, de pot « ensemble des mises, poule, pot », et jack « valet ».

Dans les jeux de hasard mécaniques (machines à sous), Combinaison gagnante, qui déclenche un mécanisme envoyant au joueur la totalité de l'argent accumulé dans la machine; cet argent. || Les « trop rares cascades de piécettes sonnantes et trébuchantes dans la sébile aux jack pots » (l'Express, 26 juil. 1980; à propos des machines à sous de Monaco).
♦ Par ext. La machine elle-même. || Jackpots alignés le long des murs d'une salle de jeux.
♦ ☑ Loc. et fig. Gagner le jackpot (angl. to hit the jack-pot, mil.
